What is pixel art?

Pixel art is digital art made one tiny square at a time. Each square is a pixel, and together they form characters, icons, game sprites, avatars and scenes. It is the look behind classic 8-bit and 16-bit video games, and it is still popular for indie games, social media profile pictures and creative hobby projects.

Pixel art tips for beginners

Use a small palette

Limiting yourself to four to eight colors makes your art look consistent and keeps it easy to shade.

Start with a simple shape

Block in the outline first, then fill the inside, then add highlights and shadows.

Pick a light direction

Use a lighter shade on the side facing the light and a darker shade on the opposite side to give flat pixels depth.
